Freelander better Fuel Efficiency and Reduced Emissions
by Roverland - October 6th, 2008.Filed under: freelander.
When the feature arrived from our friends carpages.co.uk “Freelander – Stop Start Technology” Dramatically increases fuel efficiency” we though it was another dollop of hype thought up by the marketing team in their eagerness to make the latest model from Land Rover appeal to the eco sensitive.
Freelander – Future Secure?
Orlandy has previously covered landrover deciding to reduce the production of Freelanders due to dwindling demand but all hopes are for more interest from money savers now that the new Freelander 2 TD4_e is Land Rover most fuel-efficient vehicle.
The story is well covered – see LandRover – Freelander News and Land Rover Owners Magazine – Freelanders.
Land Rover have developed a Stop Start system that shuts the engine down when the vehicle isn’t moving yet the engine continues to run – wasting fuel and adding unnecessary pollution for example when stuck in traffic – the vehicle is stationery, in neutral and the clutch is up ie going nowhere.
Freelander – Fuel Savings
In Urban conditions it is reckoned that consumption is improved from 37 mpg to 44 mpg which in these times of crippling fuel prices can mean a saving of over £100 in a year for average use.
With the benefit of the nifty gearshift indicator light, software & technological developments and efficiencies from low resistance tyres combined with the stop start savings make the Freelander 2 TD4_e the most fuel-efficient production Land Rover ever built.
In these times of financial difficulty it is in many drivers interest to make savings wherever they can – at the fuel pumps, reduced car tax for lower emmissions an either shopping online
Freelander Lower Emissions
Of course the introduction of the Stop Start savings also has an impact on the environment as the engine will not run necessarily when stuck in city traffic reducing emissions – Land Rover demonstrate their commitment to Our Planet with actions not just words – see Landrover: Land Rover Our Planet

Interesting article and its great news that even the big cars are becoming fuel efficient. While the saving costs doesn’t sound like much it all adds up over a few years.
I have also heard that insurance companies offer discounts for more fuel efficient cars so that is another reason to go green.

To handle the increased demand on the starter, the Freelander 2 TD4_e features an upgraded starter motor and a more durable absorption glass-mat battery. A battery monitoring system allows the driver to keep track of the electrical system’s condition, and the climate control has an auxiliary water pump to keep the cabin temperature consistent when the engine is stopped

Going green is what everyone is expecting these days. You can also go green by consuming less fuel now a days!
If big vehicles can become fuel efficient all the better.

In the late 80′s VW had this a stop-start system “FORMEL E” (Formula E). It was offered on such cars as the Golf (mark 1), Polo, Derby (Polo with boot / trunk). Exactly the same VW accessory. Also, BMW providing its car with this technology
