Car Hire Shortage Spells Holiday Disaster

The recent automotive industry economic downturn is having a wide ranging knock on effect. The manufacturing problems have been widely discussed, but what has not come to light until recently is the effect it is having on car hire availability.

Car hire companies are cutting their fleets by approximately 30% as they strive to cut costs. It is predicted that there will be problems with availability in several destinations this summer, including Spain, Sardinia, mainland Italy and even Geneva. Some companies are disputing this however and maintain that despite the smaller fleets, availability will not be compromised.

Unfortunately, there has been news in the press of cars not being available in peak demand times such as bank holidays. In some cases this has meant that holidays have been cancelled, resulting in a loss of income for all parties.

Just a couple of things to watch out for when booking holiday car hire. Spain is one of the most popular destinations for UK holidaymakers, so if you are planning on hiring a car when going on holiday over there, check availability online well in advance.
