I know its a bit late, but hey, better late than never!
As it happens, MIT’s entry for the DARPA Urban Challenge was a Land Rover!
DARPA stands for Defense Advanced Research Project Agency and the challenge takes the form of a robotic car race, which took place on November 3, in Victorville, CA. Thirty five teams entered the race, which is designed to test the ability of robotic cars to obey traffic laws and drive safely in a city-like environment without human assistance.
In order to “see” its environment, MIT’s LandRover was equipped with numerous laser range finders, radar units, Global Positioning Systems, and video cameras. Software was designed specifically for the challenge, which ran on 10 quad-core computers in the back of the LandRover to decipher the information and decide what to do next.
All the equipment made the LandRover look like something that belonged in a Sci-fi movie and it probably wouldn’t have lasted long driving through a mud filled pit.

MIT’s LandRover eventually came fourth in the challenge behind Carnegie Mellon, Stanford University and Virginia Tech.
